Utilitarianism was not merely a marginal philosophical moral current that disappeared without leaving a significant trace. On the contrary, this doctrine has had a profound impact on most areas of life from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century, as it echoed an era, resulting from a cultural environment, and shaped by a political condition that extended from England to the United States. This was acknowledged by Alexis de Tocqueville himself when he considered the theory of utility as one of the most suitable theories for the needs of individuals in his time, viewing its prominence in moral questions and the spread of its ideas as a natural and customary occurrence.
In this book, we have strived to answer the question: What is utility? To this end, we sought to clarify this concept, both linguistically and terminologically, as well as to clarify the foundations of utilitarian theory and to observe the practical reality as indicated by human experiences and their moral applications.
