What Is Authority?

Power always entails a paradox: it is material and immaterial, real and imaginary, desired and rejected, loved and hated, public and hidden, collective and individual, conscious and unconscious, as well as external and internal. Furthermore, power is both present and absent; its absence leads to chaos, while its excessive presence results in oppression, coercion, and tyranny. Power is both the disease and the remedy; it is indispensable and inescapable, yet we rebel against it and reject it. Often, our salvation and liberation lie in its destruction!
