The term “value” seems familiar, even common, as we continuously encounter values throughout our lives. Whether we accept or reject them, their existence remains independent of us as long as there are those who embrace and adopt them. Because we are naturally compelled to act, we turn our actions into rules that we may choose, but most of the time, we are raised on them from birth. These rules imply preference and choice, which is why we call them values. However, defining them is not so simple, as they encompass multiple meanings depending on the context in which they appear. They can relate to people, objects, actions, qualities, or quantities. They may express an abstract state or a material state or serve as a description or judgment. Despite their constant presence in philosophy since the dawn of philosophizing, values currently attract greater interest among philosophers.
