Major philosophical problematics and issues guide us to reflect on the dilemma of human selfhood and the adage “Know thyself,” so that one may become what one ought to be. We must not forget the historical background accompanying the development of the concept of the self, from the era of the Greek philosophers through Descartes to contemporary thinkers, which has crystalized in various intellectual and epistemological systems. However, we doubt that philosophy can mend the rift concerning the knowledge of the core of the self and the other, or that it can bridge the fissures surrounding ego-centeredness; this question is tied to the ontological concerns and the dilemma of the essence of being. We live in specific and inevitable situations, which we cannot transcend while ignoring the question of human being as a human being.
