It is clear that fashion has been one of the most influential phenomena on Western civilization since the Renaissance. It has dominated a significant number of modern human activities and has become, to a large extent, a “second nature.” Therefore, our understanding of fashion will contribute to our understanding of our behaviors and ourselves. However, philosophers throughout history have largely ignored the issue of fashion despite its importance, perhaps due to the prevailing belief that fashion, which seemed to them at the time to be one of the most superficial phenomena, was not a subject worthy of study at the level of a “deep” field like philosophy. Yet, if philosophy is a field concerned with achieving an understanding of the self, and if fashion—indeed, till today—is an influential phenomenon to the extent I claim here, it must be picked up as a subject of philosophical study.
