Encyclopedia of Philosophers for Young Readers– Western Philosophers (Part 1)
To philosophize means to ask ourselves questions about the world, about ourselves, and about everything that surrounds us. In other words, to philosophize means to dare to ask questions, and then not to adopt ready-made answers provided by others. Engaging in philosophy allows us to practice critical thinking and to have our own ideas. However, practicing critical thinking and forming our own ideas cannot happen without the logical and sound use of our minds. Philosophy also allows us to choose freely and not to accept everything that others tell us. More clearly, if we do not dare to think and to ask questions, we will become a plaything in the hands of others, who decide for us and rob us of our freedom of choice. Philosophy is a mental stance that a person adopts to answer the big questions that occupy their mind, such as their role in this world, the meaning of their existence, life, and death, etc. Philosophy is also a daily practice through which individuals attempt to address their problems rationally, calmly, and with sobriety.
