Al-Kindi was born in Kufa around 185 AH / 801 AD and received his scientific and philosophical education in Baghdad. He was of sharp intelligence, an avid reader, and diligent in acquiring knowledge, mastering the sciences of literature, language, and religion. He was known as the “Philosopher of the Arabs” because he was the first Arab to engage with the sciences of the ancients. He was open to Greek philosophy and played a significant role in introducing, disseminating, and improving the translations of Greek philosophers into Arabic.
