Did Nietzsche’s thought represent a transcendence of Kantian thought, or did it remain tethered to the boundaries of Kant’s propositions on cognitive, ethical, religious, and political levels? Furthermore, was Nietzsche able to present innovative philosophical propositions sufficient to constitute a distinctive Nietzschean philosophy, or did he remain faithful to Kantian philosophy throughout his writings and fragments, a student who did not surpass his teacher, merely reinterpreting his concepts and ideas in a different style?
What we have done in this study is to open the way for a different reading—one that does not only focus on identifying common points of difference but also seeks out points of resemblance and conformity. This is first because we believe that the Kantian influence that frequently stirred within Nietzsche’s soul did not remain without sources, and second because Kantian thought, despite its susceptibility to critique and scrutiny of its contents, cannot pass unnoticed without leaving clear traces and manifestations in the intellectual methods of any philosopher. This is particularly true for a philosopher who grew up loving Kantian principles and was not separated from them by a deep temporal gulf capable of obscuring the idea of influence, especially since Kantian thought still serves as a guiding thread for many thinkers, researchers, and philosophers today.
